Reaction to fire tests for building products – Determination of a building product’s propensity to undergo continuous smoldering
This standard specifies a test method to determine the ability of a building product to smoulder continuously when tested in a vertical orientation and when exposed to an open flame under the influence of natural convection airflow. The method does not impose any mechanical influence to the airflow since this would not be representative of most end-use conditions.
The test specimen is vertically mounted and has its surface exposed to a flame providing a constant heat from a propane gas burner. Smouldering is detected by measuring temperatures using thermocouples installed at defined distances within the vertical test specimen and the observation of sustained flaming following re-ignition.
The standard is intended for all building products classified according to EN 13501-1 and will, therefore, eventually affect wood-based products covered by the harmonised European standard EN 13986 when this standard is revised.
