EN 15804:2012+A2:2019 (now updated)
EN 15804:2012+A2:2019 Sustainability of construction works – Environmental product declarations – Core rules for the product category of construction products.
Revisions to EN 15804 have been agreed so that EPDs can be more aligned with the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF). Here is a summary of the main changes for the construction industry.
EN 15804 is the key standard for determining an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and was updated in 2019. It is the most important standard in a group of six European standards related to the environment, defining how companies should go about creating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
Environmental impact
The key environmental amendments from 2013 have been retained. These simplified impact assessment by including ‘characterization’ factors * within the standard and requiring impact assessments for:
- Global warming potential
- Depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer
- Acidification potential of soil and water
- Eutrophication potential
- Formation potential of tropospheric ozone
- Abiotic depletion potential.
The characterization factor is the factor derived from the characterization model which is applied to convert an assigned life cycle inventory result to the common unit of the category indicator. For more info, see European Platform on LCA.
